A stop in Yorba Linda on the drive west. - Author: Will Fullerton - Tags: Travel, Journey Out West, #Photo essay The Nixon Library sits in Yorba Linda, beside the small house where he was born. A stop on the drive west, and a strange, quiet place: a replica Oval Office and East Room, spacesuits from the years of the Moon landings, the presidential seal set into the floor wherever you look. ![The Oval Office, as it was.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-01.jpg) The Oval Office, as it was. ![The seal, underfoot.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-02.jpg) The seal, underfoot. ![Two spacesuits.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-03.jpg) Two spacesuits. ![A note in his own hand.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-04.jpg) A note in his own hand. ![A figure in the study.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-05.jpg) A figure in the study. ![The colonnade.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-06.jpg) The colonnade. ![The reflecting pool.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-07.jpg) The reflecting pool. ![The gardens.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-08.jpg) The gardens. ![Bronze, on a bench.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-09.jpg) Bronze, on a bench. Then the film camera. I let the roll run twice through the same rooms, so the pictures came back with two places in each: the portrait and the window, the chandelier and the founding page, the way a museum feels after an afternoon inside it. ![On film: the portrait and the room.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-01.jpg) On film: the portrait and the room. ![On film: “Study the past.”](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-02.jpg) On film: “Study the past.” ![On film: the chandelier over the founding page.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-03.jpg) On film: the chandelier over the founding page. ![On film: the page and the light, again.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-04.jpg) On film: the page and the light, again. ![On film: the seal.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-05.jpg) On film: the seal. ![On film: the gardens through the glass.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-263.jpg) On film: the gardens through the glass. ![On film: the gazebo and the palms.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-270.jpg) On film: the gazebo and the palms. ![On film: the window.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-267.jpg) On film: the window. ![On film: the East Room, with the flag.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-269.jpg) On film: the East Room, with the flag. ![On film: the portrait and the flag.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-268.jpg) On film: the portrait and the flag. ![On film: visitors under the portrait in the lobby.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-271.jpg) On film: visitors under the portrait in the lobby. ![On film: E pluribus unum.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/31/b4313ab3-7e6f-4f96-b826-1423fc691a06/content/images/2026/10/nixon-film-273.jpg) On film: E pluribus unum.
