Paris

Doors, stone, glass and water: Paris on foot, from the Louvre to the Seine.
Paris is a city you walk. The Métro gets you to the corner; the rest is on foot, and the rest is the point. These photographs were made that way, over a few days in September: doors and their ironwork, the Louvre from outside and in, the Seine, and the pavement underfoot.

The Louvre is a palace before it is a museum, and the pyramid is the one modern thing allowed in its courtyard. From below, the old stone shows through the glass; from the stair inside, the sky.

What stays is not the monuments. It is the particular blue of a door and the lion on it, a car parked where a car has always been parked, and a date stamped into a paving stone, which is as good a souvenir as any.
